Shirley Smith was born on November 26, 1962 in Leeds, West Yorkshire as the youngest of 3 siblings. She dropped out of high-school to marry Larry Foulke, an RAF pilot, with her parents' blessing. The marriage was consummated on May day of 1981.

Shirley was officially informed of Foulke's death at sea on the 27th of May, 1982, six days after his death.
